CURIOSITY:
The designation of Almada is thought to have come from the Arabic word المعدن (transliteration: al-ma´adan), "the mine", for the reason that, during the Arab domain of the Iberian Peninsula, the Arabs proceeded to explore the deposit of Adiça, at the end of the municipality.
Father António Carvalho da Costa, on page 309 of vol. 3rd of his "Corografia Portuguesa", work published between 1706 and 1712, when it refers to "Vila de Almada", says that this: "was donated by D. Afonso Henriques in 1147. They called it VIMADEL, which means" settlement " of all ". Later it was called Almada because it was conquered to the Moors by a knight of this nickname".
